HL-LHC Computing and Software
Review Panel – 2026
In 2020, a review committee under the auspices of the LHCC was established to review the TDRs for Computing and Software for the HL-LHC, analogous to the process for the detector TDRs. https://committees.web.cern.ch/review-hl-lhc-computing
This committee has conducted two reviews in this series to review the R&D plans for meeting the challenges of the HL-LHC. The reports can be found at
In 2026, ATLAS, CMS and WLCG are preparing the documentation for evaluation. The CMS Conceptual Design Report (CDR) was reviewed June 18-19, 2026, and reviews of the ATLAS TDR and WLCG Roadmap will be scheduled at a later date. These documents will be reviewed to assess that the Software and Computing aspects for the HL-LHC are appropriate and on track to meet the needs of the experiments.
The documents and presentations should outline the baseline computing model, and summarize the baseline inputs and assumptions, and the methodology within the context of the scientific and technical goals for the HL-LHC Program. Progress and modifications toward the R&D plans presented in 2020 should be discussed. Focus areas should include
- The major technological and economic risks and uncertainties and the implications for the computing model and the technical R&D program. To the extent possible, mitigation strategies should be presented, such as in the form of ‘what if’ scenarios
- Resource Management and Workforce Development
- Path to operational readiness in time for Day 1 of HL-LHC
- Vision for full luminosity, including leveraging Large Scale AI Initiatives and evolutions in the practice of Scientific Computing
- Partnering with CERN and other WLCG funding agencies in order to mitigate any residual risks
Expected outcomes:
The panel will produce a written report outlining advice and high-level recommendations to CMS, based on information available in the CDR document and presented during the review meeting.
